Account of shoot day.

The week running up to the shoot we made a lot of extra preparations. One of the main things that was problem as the cast of our shoot as we were unable to confirm our main role in the w3eek of the shoot. We took procotions and acquired a back up the day before the shoot so we would be able to have and actual artist. The day before the shoot we had to pain a lot of things this included the blue screens that we used and plus the mirrors that we used had to be put together and wheels applied to them, then the last thing that we did is paint the floor of the studio so that the black effect that we used would be at full quality.

The only problem that we really had was that we lost the person we were going to use for are shoot the day before the shoot but we had a replacement so it wasn’t too bad. Although it did mean going over the song with her a lot that day and giving her a run down of the concept so she understood. We also had a slight lack in preparation but that was all sorted by the day the only thing it really affected was the broadness of what happens with the flats and the amount of plates we had to smash because of budget problems.

On the day of the shoot the first order of business was to make sure that we had every one we needed. We were originally short one boy to work the flats but being in the space we realized that there was only space for 5 flats. Also because of poor organisation we had to teach and rehearse flat movements on the day bu this turned out ok and we got shooting we went thre movement with are artist and she did brilliantly.

On the day of the shoot we didn’t actually look at the storyboard once, this was mainly to do with it being such bad quality and had a massive lack of content to it. We did however know what important shots we had noted down and so there for in that respect we did stick to it partially. The reason that changes were made was because were because, one being in the space for the first time and having the restriction of the one way mirror to shot threw. The changes, I think over all made are video much better the choreography with the mirrors worked really well and a good collaboration of minds gave us a wealth of quality camera shots and ideas.

The camera we used was a jvc high definition camera which we were using especially to capture the detailed shots we wanted in the narrative scenes which were all close up. Also we used a large light rig with downward lighting to give us the look of black that we were looking for. Plus the sound system we used was in place so it was clear to hear the song when shooting a take.

As a group we didn’t really decide on a role as we worked as a very equal production team. In the morning section of the shoot, which was performance based, were I was choreographer I played a director role because I think that I had it clear how the camera should be for the different choreography. I was also calling action and cut through the performance. I n the afternoon a I took a slight step back but was till calling a lot of the shots but my team took more of control towards the end of the day because of the nature of the shots.
On the day in the morning I had the job of teaching the five boys we had recruited to do flat work some simple but important movements, I improvised some of these movement on the day as I realised that I couldn’t teach some of the more complex ones to them. But the stuff that I went over them with got a lot of praise so I’m under the influence that it worked and looked good for the shot.
Once again the flats were my real involvement and I was very happy with what we were able to achieve with them. I have to say the scene were we have a food fight sort of thing I think we got way more on footage than we expected and the shoots we got were of a better quality. I was also very happy with the little amount matt and like HAD to say to us because that gave me the feel that we were under control and this makes me think that we did quite well.

Although it was one of my best part I would have liked to do more with the flats and I didn’t get some of the things that I wanted but we still got other things also I was unhappy with the amount of time some of the narrative stuff took us I feel we could have had more time with those scenes have we had been quicker at setting up.

We stuck to the plan quite well I believe we finished 15 mins early and we weren’t short of anything that we wanted to do and we finished on a good note. I think that the amount of things we missed with idea of the mirrors reflecting things that we didn’t want but this had changed our product as it will mean that we will have to cut round those things and make are cutting quite fast which I think will work well and fall in to our advantage. The way the food ended up turning out was also a change as our artist got covered in soup on the first tale we could only do one of the takes which I ok but will limit us during in post production I can imagine.

If I was to re shot this video or in fact another one I would have done a much better job of the pre production planning because I think that our video had much more potential than it did. I would have taken more time to research the mirrors that we used and devise more clever ways of moving them also I would have planned the shots more accurately so that it wasn’t so random on the day because that made me nervous.

Albim cover.

The album cover for our artist is a picture of her face with other cut up pictures of her on it. this is a visual representaion of the album title "not me" suposedly portraying the fragmented world that she sings and peforms in and that her target audience live in as well. we want to show in this image the idea of multi personality dis order but in a mild way. the song titles for this album as well show a confused mind and the stra track of the ambum "breaking dishes" is were the artist image is seen in full light the role of women in society these days and the way that she has to fight back against men and the conceptual creation of the mind is the mirrors. The hidden message on the front is just agian there to highlight to the women section of are audience that it is what is on the inside that counts and that women in pwoer ment mentality.

Media Treatment
Track- Breakin’ Dishes by Rihanna
Artist- Yvon
Group Members – Alex P, Alex C and Rabi K-A

The breakin’ Dishes is video about a late teen, and early 20’s woman who is at her peek and seeks emancipation form the men in her life who don’t appreciate her as the stereotypical woman she had no problem being. This is seen through her flashes in the shattering glass showing her practicing the dominant ideologies expected of women to their man. However, each scene leaves her in disappointment. This video shows the extent to which her frustration has driven her, and how fed up she has become. Caught between her head and her heart (captures by our use of mirrors to show alter egos), she battles to leave the world of love by ‘breaking’ the rules, resulting in furry because she is so determined. She is breaking free from that ideal woman who makes ‘dishes’ and shown especially in the scene where she defeats two big men. By being mainly performance base, with abstract views of her thoughts in the breaking glass, we give the viewers an engaging outlook on her character. Viewing her as a role model and inspirational figure to those caught in the same situation. Her sex appeal and edginess would also attract men to see that emancipated women could be the ideal type.

Heavy nmetal band to sisters of mercy song called vision thing. this will be ina prison and each musicion will be ion a seperat cell and on there own then it cuts backward tio them playing in diffrent places all the way back to the murder scene were the crime was comminted.

Treatment 2

Artist name is Jessica Skeoch she is a solo artist who does opera and specilizes in vocal expression. The track that she will be singing is perfect day.
The song will be sung to a video were it is based onn a lake with couples danceing ballet with each other as the video progresses it becomes clear that other couples are there and as the videocloses we get to see all of them on the lake.

Treatment 1

The name of the Band for my first idea is "XEROX" they are an indy going on modern rock band they have a slightly rebelious attitude but are always dressed smartly so up hold that juxter posistion. They are a synthetic group started out in liverpool. The track that i will want them to do is Kids By MGMT.
The IDEA.
my idea for this Music video (MV) is that it wikll start of with the first vewi basic notes being shown played on a guitar hero guitar and as we get further thre the intro of the song we see more of the kids playing guitar hero instiments then when the main music starts we are iun a wide shot of the whole band playing as kids on guitasr hero then it flickers from the kids to the actuall band but there wereing the same cloths to denote that they are them as children. thre the vid this happens a lot for all angles and alll shots.

Final evaluation - My blog ansars the 7 questions

Evaluation
I have ansared the following 7 questions in my blog
1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions(repeated pattern over time) of real media products?
2) How does your media product represent particular social groups?
3) What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
4) Who would be the audience for your media product?
5) How did you attract / address your audience?
6) What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
7) Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

1. In what ways does your Media Product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The brief was to construct the opening or a title sequence to a thriller for a 15 classification. The sequence was to last 2 minutes. Our aims whilst constructing our psycho-thriller “snapshot” were to organize as independently as possible the successful construction of our first media text from concept to product. We wanted to achieve the look and concept of the film that we were planning and to competently use the camera, edit and introduce sound effects in order to achieve a standard of work that would match a similar text produced by a genuine industry institution. We aimed to study in greater detail the function and conventions of opening sequences. We put together a PowerPoint of available thrillers which enabled us to research them and see which films linked with the different types of thrillers. We therefore obtained useful influences that linked to our media product. We were inspired by “exorsist” “The omen”, “mirrors”, “the uninvited” and “pitch black”. We took aspects of these well known films: the convention of the fact there is another world as in religios power-that there are forces more powerful in this world that humans cannot understand or control. This uses the ‘individual against mass’ convention. However, “snapshot” differs from the PowerPoint thrillers as it stays very low key for a lot of the thriller then jumps at a certain point but not to much and waits a little longer than normal thrillers. Our product has, therefore, both used and challenged main conventions of conventional thriller.

2 How does your media product represent social groups?

Snapshot tries to represent one dominant social group which is a white male in his 30’s. This might be affective if we are trying to make the audience relate to and identify with this particular social group, as many heroes in films are represented as males as the “norm”. We tried to get the camera to make the audience uncomfortable by making the editing pace faster when it came to a realization in our film - e.g. when the guy realized that a horrific element or spirit or force was greater than even him – one of the dominant forces in society. This created tension as the audience waited to see how he would cope with this realization. The lighting in our project was all a red wash, which was authentic for a mise-en-scene of a dark room, but also signified the danger the character was in and how we should be scared for their life – at the hands of something more sinnster. I think that it was better to use a white, middle class man than a group in society that is not the mainstream, because more people can relate to it because that’s what they are used to doing in films anyway. IN another film though, we could consider different funding options and try to make a point about the social groups represented – and perhaps qualify for more funding like BULLET BOY did.

3 What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

We were thinking of a company like Revolver to distribute our film in the UK, or perhaps FILMFOUR – who can distribute low budget films in the U.K. My imaginary production company SAVAGE Productions worked on a very low budget by using a lot of our school’s equipment. If we were a real company, we would be similar in style and ideas to what WARP films works on.

4 Who would be the audience for your media product?

The BBFC would probably give us a rating of 15 for the subject matter.

The main target audience for our thriller/horror would be for the ages 15-24 in the first bracket, and also 25-34. They would mostly be male and range on the JICTARS and JICNARS from A, B and C categories (as previously posted on in TARGET AUDIENCES) This film would not suit an audience of any younger because it would be too complex, and also it might be too graphic or gory, depending on how much of a budget we got to show the scenes where the spirit or force is disturbing the natural order of the main character’s world. We think its an African spirit (as hinted in the opening titles with the prophetic use of the mask) so if possible we would include something about Africa and a tribe there sending evil through images. This might tap into old fears in England about foreigners being untrustworthy, and might suit the current climate of politics in the UK. On the psychographic scale, this film might be suitable for mainstreamers or reformers, depending on the overall message e.g. would this film be seen as racist by portraying evil spirits from overseas or other cultures? Or would it be read as seeing what is going on in many parts of our society in the UK – fear being built up for non – “British” things.

5 How did you attract/address you audience?

We attracted the audience to our movie by putting a handsome man in the male lead and an intriguing mise-en-scene that makes people stop and look. The colour scheme is very important because it screams danger to our viewers. We also chose our music carefully from a composer that was going for a horror element in his songs – he let us use it for free to promote his work – and then we were able to cut our film to the music to create maximum impact. The frantic shots and increased editing pace when our main man realizes there may be a threat to him and the natural order of the world helps to build tension and suspense. We took the ideas and colour scheme of our opening and brainstormed together as a group to come up with an ideal poster to promote our film in tube stations and around major urbance centres. Our poster used the taglin “Say Cheese…” which does not finish the sentence and leaves you in suspense wanting more. The red on the poster is intimidating and the butterfly is supposed to work like the poster of “The Blair Witch Project” did – so that just as people were supposed to be afraid of those little bundles of sticks after a while – they would also be scared of the butterfly outline symbol that we made in black and red, after they’d seen our movie.

This would be affective if we look at the sort of t shirts and other advertising products we could use to promote the film by giveaway free before it was released. A website on myspace or something similar would help to get across our film to a wide audience – and promotional trailers on youtube and other sites would also (like FACEBOOK which most of us use) We have done audience feedback on youtube already which is covered in another blog post. It would be hard to get an international audience at this stage with such a low budget and relatively unknown actors that we have.

6 What have you learnt about technologies form the process of construction this product?

I have learnt tons about the different sorts of technologies used in film production. When we were deciding on what we would do for our individual roles, I wanted to be part of the technical crew mostly behind the camera if possible. We used different cameras, lighting and editing styles and techniques along the way and picked up information about how to focus and why exposure is important on the still cameras before moving on to a moving image with the school’s SONY PD170 video camera that uses miniDV digi tape that you can tape over. In real films it is far more important to get things perfect technically before you shoot because of the cost of film stock and developing actual film. Our prelim task was done quickly, with one or two takes for all the set ups. We had about 5 or 6 set ups to do as a minimum, but everything had already been planned out for us on a storyboard that was provided by the school. Complex Lighting set ups were too difficult to worry about for our main task and student production – we are not a professional crew but tried !! We stuck with one main light with a red wash over it (which was shone from outside into one of the small windows at the top of the room) as well as the smaller light globe that someone brought in to show it was a darkroom where you would really use a red light. Editing was difficult, but we enjoyed this bit because we could see everything coming together like more of a real movie. We were glad that our teachers made us plan and shoot so many different angles and aspects of our actor and our small location. We were also glad that we planned out different elements of the mise-en-scene to dress the set and ensure there were enigma codes present for the audience to wonder about, so they would watch on. We used a program called Final Cut Pro (or FCP for short) to edit both our prelim and main tasks. We also could have used something called Adobe After Effects if our project had required any special effects, but in the end we decided to use a standard font on FCP to do our titles. We also thought the overwhelming red gel that gave a red wash lighting effect to the project was enough, and that in 2 minutes, we had adequately introduced what might come after in the main feature film. When we were editing, we made sure we cut on the action and movement a lot so there was a feeling that things were flowing along. We also held shots more on some elements that were close ups, like a skull and a photo and made sure that the focus pull ended with a title so it felt neatly resolved at the end. We quickened the editing pace to create panic of the character finding something out. We only used the ambient sound on a light being switched on at the start, and then let the sound of the non diagetic music create a tense, dramatic atmostphere.

7 Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression form it to the full production?

On reflection, it is clear to see what a big difference in quality there is from our preliminary task to our main completed task. One example of the difference from one to the other, was that we only used the overhead lights in the room for the prelim tasks. This made a difference to the kind of colour that all of our finished prelim tasks had. They mostly looked cheaper and much lower production values than our finished tasks, which had more thought put into the lighting setups. When we edited our prelim task, it was very simple because things had been mapped out for us and there was no music or titles to think about. Also, the prelim task did not have to be very long, and did not require any great thought to be put into lots of props etc. We took the open ended script and interpreted it as a group as being a phone call that had to be made, but the script could have meant a range of different things if you put in different props or sexes of actors. At the time, people who were watching our finished sequence were interested in seeing their friends perform but if you didn’t know the actors it would not have been that interesting. I think that my main task, SNAPSHOT has turned out very well and that it is suitable for many people to be interested e.g. not just people at our school, but for a much wider range of people. To test this, we asked people to give us some audience feedback on our work in classrooms with people aged around 16 – 19 years old, and also amongst teachers around the school. Mostly, their feedback was very positive, with people really like the music and the fact that the main guy looked freaked out when he found the clues to the puzzle. We also posted our work on youtube under 2 different names, one through the Hurtwood Media Channel and one through a made up name that represented some of our Media classes. We then asked people to comment in a constructive way on our project. The live feed of comments from one of our postings on youtube is on this blog, so we can be updated with feedback as it comes in about our project. I have analysed some of the comments specifically in another post on this blog, by posting the comments and then how useful I felt this feedback was underneath it. In a real situation, it might be useful to get audience feedback in this way, but then again, there are a lot of people who don’t have to be constructive which can lead to harsh or unfair comments sometimes. Overall I think that people liked our work and appreciated what we put up because they could see we are just starting out. I enjoyed making all of these media products and they have helped me to understand part of the film industry and why it is so difficult to work in it.

I think if I were to do this again the I would take more time to really research the place in which I was shooting because that I what burdened us the most we were not efficient in the planning of our shots and also most of our time was lost due to the lack of shoot day planning so I would be more carful next time about how I go around doing thisgs the day before.

OUR FEEDBACK FROM YOUTUBE MEMBERS

We posted our work on youtube when it was done, with the following note on it – asking people to leave constructive comments for us.

Our request on youtube:

Hi, please leave comments!!!!
Do you think this sequence is effective? Why, why not?
What category/genre of film would you say this opening is?
Do you think there are any elements that need to be added?
Would you get rid of anything or change anything?? Why, why not? What primary target audience do you think it's appropriate for?
What secondary target audience (if appropriate)?? e.g. Psychographic profile -appealing to any particular personality type (like reformers or mainstreamers etc), values, attitudes, interests, or lifestyles?
What about in terms of demographics - age and gender? Socioeconomic background?

After this taster... DO YOU WANT TO SEE THE REST?!??!?!

When our work had been on youtube for 2 weeks (at the start of May 2009) the audience had rated it 4 out of 5 stars and we had a total of 15 comments from either Hurtwood House media students or random Youtube users. I have put some of the comments below.

tuncelg (1 week ago)
not bad but editing could be better. too many transitions. font/typography and placing also has a room for improvement.

I agree with this one. In future I would work on fonts more.

SabretoothStitch (1 week ago)
Horror thriller aimed at 15-30 both sexes. Aimed at the middle ground. Really like the music and it is a really effective idea, but you are left thinking where do we go from here rather than what happens next. The plot needs to open up more before such a fantastical thing can be found - unless you are going to kill him in the next sequence and bring in a detective.

I think this project is brilliant! Altough there are some space for further improvement.Well done guys!!

Hasn't your psychopath GOD A F****** DIGITAL CAMERA WITH PHOTOSHOP?????much more fun, believe me darlings....

justskiptotheend1 (5 days ago)
This makes me want to photograph winter trees and kill them. Live with that you irresponsibile young film makers...

goncharovnik (5 days ago)
i really like the intence music !!! and the red colour in the back ground !

GraceChadwick (5 days ago)
i think that the music really working in you film and the overal camera angles that you have used. i like the red filter that u added i think it adds another level to a simple yet effective film i like guys x

Many of our audiences liked the red gel lighting and music, but some thought the editing had room for improvement.
I don’t like some of the comments, but can see that using youtube definitely allows for a range of people to see and feedback on our content.

Account of shoot day schedule.

On the shoot day we aimed to be set up by a certain time but because of the way in which we went there and the time we ended up wasting in the morning we didn’t start till half an hour late and so we were pressed for time and this had a major knock on effect to our editing because we didn’t have enough time to shoot a variety of shoots then we ended up not having a wide variety in editing.

Account of locations.

We started by looking at darkrooms on the internet and seeing what they included in them then us started looking round the school at places which most looked like the dark rooms. We then found a place which was in the chemistry lab where there were taps the right heighted desk and a sink.

But due to the booking of our actors we had to change shoot days and so ended up not being able to use the chemistry lab so we had to search for another place.

We ended up finding a suitable place outside school through a teacher. The place was called LEITH HILL that was was exactly what we wanted it was small with a desk and had perfect places for the lights to make it red. We went to the house and took photos of it to plan our set ups and what we would need for the shoot.

Who would produce my film?

A case study we looked at on BULLETBOY was released by REVOLVER and supported by places like the UK FILM COUNCIL also. Many UK films do not have big budgets.

I think that our film would be created and distributed by a low budget film company because I think that our target audience would be more likely to watch a lower budget film company because they don’t always have the best advertisements all around for you to see.

Because of this, the people who are watching those movies will have done research in to going to see that movie and that is what I would expect my audience to do and so that is why I can see this being a FILMFOUR movie or something along those lines.

Account of our target audience

Our target audience that we had in mind. keeoping the idea that it is a psychologigiacal thriller, I think that the majority of the people watching this movie would be male, maybe middle class and their age would range between 15-34 yr olds - and older. On the Jicnars scale, which is the Joint Industry Comittee for National Readership Surveys - they would be A, B and C Class perhaps.
Hopefully, our audience would be quite mature and intellectual.

On a Psychographic profiling system, our film would appeal to mainstreamers, but also actualisers, fulfillers and achievers, and would also enjoy other films like the remake of “The Omen” and "Memento", as well as older titles like "Seven" and "Jeepers Creepers"

Below is a run down of where I sourced the information on Jictars and Jicnars from:

social grade (or socio-economic class):

The socio-economic classification system used by the National Readership Survey, and generally for market research in the UK. The social grade of an informant is based on the occupation or former occupation of the head of the family unit, or in certain circumstances, eg where the head of the family unit is retired or unemployed and has a low income, it may be based on the occupation of the chief wage earner. Usually this person is also the head of the household. The classes are:

Social Grade Social Status Occupation

A Upper middle class Higher managerial/administrative/ professional

B Middle class Intermediate managerial/administrative/ professional

Cl Lower middle class Supervisory or clerical and junior managerial/administrative/professional

C2 Skilled working class Skilled manual workers

D Working class Semi and unskilled manual workers

E Those at lowest levels of subsistence State pensioners or widows (no other earnings), casual or lowest grade workers

The six classes are often combined into four (AB/C1/C2/DE) or into two (ABC1/C2DE).

An account of the research sources wen used.

While in the development of our idea we very regualrly used research that each f us conducted to either add to alter or sometimes take away ideas if wed seen them used and not work. One of us may have watched a movie at the weekend and there was a really cool lookiong shot in that movie which would look good in ouors or something alonwe those lines we also used you tube a lot to study certain scenes that we had hered about or been given by are teacher. we looked at movie postrs to try and think what would are movie poster look like and what would it be about. Once we had a set idea of location we looked at very specific movies to see how other movies had achived the dark room idea.

Account of first production group meeting.

In our first meeting we didnt et any were near to the final product that we ended up creating. in our first meeting we discussed our indaviv=dula ideas and looked at what each of us wanted in our sequences, some wanted a certain camera angle shot soem wanted certain sounds used and others wanted the idea of the antagonist t be theres, so we had a good group because we were able to discuss it quite easilly. we came to the dissision in the first one that we liked the idea of something watching something or someone being watched or followed or stalked something along those lines any way we came to the dissision abouit the photo idea and the fac that someone would appear in the photo after it had been taken we changed this after a while to an object in the photo then it became the butterfly.

Thriller idea presentaions

My original idea was quite far away in face value from our final production but still remained to have a core part in our final idea. my idea was about the fear of something following you that was ambiguouse as in you didnt know wat it is. My idea was to use certain camera angles and lights to create the idea of a light following someone and the idea that you never see wat it is that is following them. It was in my mind targeted at young thrill seekers who enjoyed a good scare i had it imaganed as being an 18 and ranging to about a target age of about 35 maybe 40. I would also want it to be made by a top end film company paramount or universal studios.

Intro to useing still cameras.

I thins lesson we went rounfd the school with a partner to take pictures of each other. the idea of theis exersise was to practise getting the diffrent shots that we would need to know in our production shot. and also learning about the rule of thrirds.

Account of editing Preliminary task.

In this lesson we lerant how to edit useing fiuanl cut pro. We were shown very quickely how it worked then we started onm are own peices at first work was slow but once we learnt the short cuts and the general idea of things it was a simple task to edit the sort sequence that we shot. we onlt covere basics in this and didnt look at fade transsisions and titles or any thing we would cover thoses during the actual production making.

Account of shooting preliminary task.

In this lesson we shot the prelim task in our future grouops for our production. this was a fairly easy straight forward task that we had to do it involved us simple getting two actors to act a very short sceen with a set script and a set number of shots that we had to get for the task.

The shots that we had to get involved very simpole and not very complicated tasks. shots were things like over the shoulder wide and close ups.
