Final Cut

Rough Cut Evaluation

The first thing that we did in our creative process is, once digitised we looked throw our footage and logged all the different shots that we took from the shoot day, in to different folders so that we would be able to edit easily and quickly. Learning to sync the music to the video was a hard process but once we found a good way of doing it we went threw quite quickly.
We have tried to create a piece that gives the feels of panic and frustration using quick cuts on the beat and changing the shot type often has helped give this feel to the rough cut. The story board resembles almost nothing of our rough cut because of the different shots we had taken on shot day the changes we made have been down to the material that we got and also due to the ill prepared manner of our group some things have just been done because of time saving. I think the strengths of the rough cut are that we have used a varied shot length we have cut well to the beat and used the markers in final cut to our advantage to give this clean cutting look. It lacks excitement and panache which I fear will never happen due to our lack of progress. People have said that they like I but it needs something else, which I completely understand because I am in complete agreement with what they have said once after affects is out in though I am still worried that it wont be any better than it already is which isn’t much in retrospect. We still need to do a lot of cleaning up with it because a lot of the shots are still boring out of sync and time and we need, if we want it to be good, to make a big change to this and work hard on refining the good ideas we have at the moment and pushing them threw more than we have been doing. Other videos which have influenced us have been many other Rhiannon and beonceye videos witch involve the one artist focus much like ours and so we looked at them to see how they cut it and in what way they try to use editing to solve problems of bad shots perhaps or this witch just need to cut around. We also looked at other pop videos which incorporate the same idea as us so we can see how It is done. We still have to do our entire after effects portion of the video witch we are ready to do but haven’t even started yet and the idea that we originally had has been abandoned so we have a lot of work to do in that of finding the shots that we will use for the new idea but I have a feeling that it will work.
In after effects we need to establish what parts of the blue screen we need to do also what will go on them and finally we need to resolve a blue wall we at the moment have in our video which has nothing to go on It at the moment.

Account of shoot day.

The week running up to the shoot we made a lot of extra preparations. One of the main things that was problem as the cast of our shoot as we were unable to confirm our main role in the w3eek of the shoot. We took procotions and acquired a back up the day before the shoot so we would be able to have and actual artist. The day before the shoot we had to pain a lot of things this included the blue screens that we used and plus the mirrors that we used had to be put together and wheels applied to them, then the last thing that we did is paint the floor of the studio so that the black effect that we used would be at full quality.

The only problem that we really had was that we lost the person we were going to use for are shoot the day before the shoot but we had a replacement so it wasn’t too bad. Although it did mean going over the song with her a lot that day and giving her a run down of the concept so she understood. We also had a slight lack in preparation but that was all sorted by the day the only thing it really affected was the broadness of what happens with the flats and the amount of plates we had to smash because of budget problems.

On the day of the shoot the first order of business was to make sure that we had every one we needed. We were originally short one boy to work the flats but being in the space we realized that there was only space for 5 flats. Also because of poor organisation we had to teach and rehearse flat movements on the day bu this turned out ok and we got shooting we went thre movement with are artist and she did brilliantly.

On the day of the shoot we didn’t actually look at the storyboard once, this was mainly to do with it being such bad quality and had a massive lack of content to it. We did however know what important shots we had noted down and so there for in that respect we did stick to it partially. The reason that changes were made was because were because, one being in the space for the first time and having the restriction of the one way mirror to shot threw. The changes, I think over all made are video much better the choreography with the mirrors worked really well and a good collaboration of minds gave us a wealth of quality camera shots and ideas.

The camera we used was a jvc high definition camera which we were using especially to capture the detailed shots we wanted in the narrative scenes which were all close up. Also we used a large light rig with downward lighting to give us the look of black that we were looking for. Plus the sound system we used was in place so it was clear to hear the song when shooting a take.

As a group we didn’t really decide on a role as we worked as a very equal production team. In the morning section of the shoot, which was performance based, were I was choreographer I played a director role because I think that I had it clear how the camera should be for the different choreography. I was also calling action and cut through the performance. I n the afternoon a I took a slight step back but was till calling a lot of the shots but my team took more of control towards the end of the day because of the nature of the shots.
On the day in the morning I had the job of teaching the five boys we had recruited to do flat work some simple but important movements, I improvised some of these movement on the day as I realised that I couldn’t teach some of the more complex ones to them. But the stuff that I went over them with got a lot of praise so I’m under the influence that it worked and looked good for the shot.
Once again the flats were my real involvement and I was very happy with what we were able to achieve with them. I have to say the scene were we have a food fight sort of thing I think we got way more on footage than we expected and the shoots we got were of a better quality. I was also very happy with the little amount matt and like HAD to say to us because that gave me the feel that we were under control and this makes me think that we did quite well.

Although it was one of my best part I would have liked to do more with the flats and I didn’t get some of the things that I wanted but we still got other things also I was unhappy with the amount of time some of the narrative stuff took us I feel we could have had more time with those scenes have we had been quicker at setting up.

We stuck to the plan quite well I believe we finished 15 mins early and we weren’t short of anything that we wanted to do and we finished on a good note. I think that the amount of things we missed with idea of the mirrors reflecting things that we didn’t want but this had changed our product as it will mean that we will have to cut round those things and make are cutting quite fast which I think will work well and fall in to our advantage. The way the food ended up turning out was also a change as our artist got covered in soup on the first tale we could only do one of the takes which I ok but will limit us during in post production I can imagine.

If I was to re shot this video or in fact another one I would have done a much better job of the pre production planning because I think that our video had much more potential than it did. I would have taken more time to research the mirrors that we used and devise more clever ways of moving them also I would have planned the shots more accurately so that it wasn’t so random on the day because that made me nervous.

Albim cover.

The album cover for our artist is a picture of her face with other cut up pictures of her on it. this is a visual representaion of the album title "not me" suposedly portraying the fragmented world that she sings and peforms in and that her target audience live in as well. we want to show in this image the idea of multi personality dis order but in a mild way. the song titles for this album as well show a confused mind and the stra track of the ambum "breaking dishes" is were the artist image is seen in full light the role of women in society these days and the way that she has to fight back against men and the conceptual creation of the mind is the mirrors. The hidden message on the front is just agian there to highlight to the women section of are audience that it is what is on the inside that counts and that women in pwoer ment mentality.
